As in any relationship, the wooing is just part of the effort. Much energy is needed on the back-end to maintain a healthy mentoring relationship. It must be consistently nurtured and often refreshed – these tasks fall specifically to the protégé. Meeting deadlines, exceeding expectations, and consistent advancement are all vital to keeping a sponsor interested and motivated to promote your skills and career.
Another great way to strengthen your sponsor relationship – become one yourself! Harnessing and growing talent is arguably the best demonstration of leadership ability and potential. (more…)

This is a great shift in organizational structure from our traditional corporate ladder to a lattice structure, fueled by both the changing demographics of our human capital as well as technology and the psychology of employee motivation. This month we will focus on how to build a collaborative workforce beginning with your inner circle of influence and extending to your entire organization.
While an at-large approach to a collaborative workforce seems appropriate, the magnitude of that undertaking can easily overwhelm. Instead, we begin by looking at your smallest, but greatly significant inner circle of influence. Mentoring relationships provide both the mentor and protégé an opportunity to collaborate and communicate effectively. (more…)

Have you had a boss that expected everyone to take an hour for lunch and they took two? How about the employer that expected you to stay late but had to leave promptly at 4:59? I’m guessing that either you are no longer working for them, or are actively looking!
Jack and Patricia Phillips have spent over a decade and conducted and/or studied over 400 impact studies to measure the success of major training and development programs. During this analysis they found several patterns and eventually identified 11 reasons why training and development fails. Lucira Jane Nebelung has intertwined love and leadership in her latest People &Strategy article. I know it sounds fuzzy and a little “Kumbaya,” but in our last blog we talked about 1,026% returns and today we will talk total business turnaround. And it all begins with love.
Nebelung lists the four components of love that, when integrated, enables leading as love: (more…)

In Harvard Business Review, the authors of The Knowledge-Creating Company shared the six abilities of wise and phronetic leaders. Nonaka and Takeuchi explained that the gulf between theory and practice of business ethics occur due to the great divide between what top management preaches and what the frontline employees actually do. Do you find this to be a problem at your organization? It is probably easier to ask who doesn’t have this problem. (more…)

In our last blog you thought I was a socialist, but I made the argument that Japanese companies do serve a higher social purpose and have gained consumer’s trust and respect. You have to admit that you are still skeptical but intrigued. Today we will learn the first ability of a wise and phronetic leader. According to Nonaka and Takeuchi in Harvard Business Review, a phronetic leader leads with practical wisdom, making judgments and decisions on the fly while considering the higher view of what is good for society.
